Tips for Recession Proofing Your eBay Business

More than ever people are searching on eBay for great items at great prices.  While it is important to be aware of what has been working for you, be sure to keep an open mind when deciding what to sell on eBay.

Here are a few tips to remember when expanding your eBay business and to help ensure you don’t get caught in a recession.

Stock your inventory with a wide variety of items to meet the needs of a broader audience.  Always do your research and know what items sell well for you – keep these key items in stock.  If you find you are passionate about an item that sells well for you on eBay, that is an added bonus.  I tend to choose a variety of used and new Boutique clothing items, and then add in toys around the holiday season for extra sales.  That’s what I have found works for me.  A major tip to remember is to stock ALL seasons at ALL times.  Other countries are in opposite seasons, which makes potential sales endless.

BUT, be careful not to get stuck in your comfort zone.  Try new things and expand slowly by building your customer base to a large range of repeat buyers.  For example, selling clothing can limit you to only one target market.  This may require reaching out to the larger source of suppliers that can be found at World Wide Brands.  Try to find items that compliment what you are already selling.  Provide a ‘one stop shop’ feel for the buyer.  If you are selling children’s clothing, compliment those with baby bedding and/or maternity clothing.

Organize Your eBay Workspace

A neat and organized workspace always makes me feel refreshed and ready to get things accomplished.
I thrive on a clean work area. For me there is nothing worse than sitting down to a mess of paperwork in front of my computer. Or having to step over piles of items that need to be photographed and listed to my eBay store. It is so UN-motivating.

Do you have piles of papers; packing slips and invoices that need filing, or articles that have been printed out and have yet to be read? Try this: It’s what I call the ‘paper game’. Take the pile of papers stacked in front of you and make them go away for good. And I don’t mean just throwing them in the trash.

Starting at the top of the pile, take the first piece of paperwork and don’t put it down until it has reached it’s appropriate place. Keep doing this with each piece of paperwork until you have made the entire pile disappear.

Now on to your eBay inventory. This can be a tough one for some of us – that’s OK. How you keep things organized may depend on the type of items that you sell. Storing clothing is easier than storing toys. I started out using the big rubber bin method:

So, yeah I’m 5ft. tall, and as my business grew so did my bins – all the way to the ceiling! I found this to not be the most effective way to organize. Nor a productive use of time when I had to spend time searching for an item to ship and it happened to be in the very bottom bin!
So I cleaned up my bins and switched to the shelving method:

I found this to be MUCH more organized. When I have an item sell, I can see it, just reach out and grab it in seconds, and ship it on to the buyer. I just feel much happier with an organized space. Oh, and the treadmill in the last picture – sold it on eBay.

Ready for the Holiday Season on eBay?

Getting excited yet? I’ve already noticed an increase in traffic when I am out shopping, and stores have their Holiday displays up.  Is the Holiday Season already here?  I think so!  I have even notices an increase in my eBay store sales.  I love my store sales, since it’s how I sell a majority of the year.

This has got me thinking about my eBay “To Do” list.  I started wondering am I ready for the holidays?

Here is a quick look at what I like to do to get ready for the Holiday rush:

  • List all remaining Holiday inventory – gift items, clothes, toys.  Items won’t sell if buyers can’t see them!  I always encourage you to keep listing items to your store.  List all seasons, all the time.  Don’t give into the temptation to hold on to an item just because you think it is off season and no one will buy it.  Some of my best sales have come from off season items.
  • Clean out the toy boxes!  We do this twice a year – before Christmas and before Easter.  Each time we list any sellable toys we can part with at least a month before the holiday.  The earnings are then put towards new toys, I find it a great motivator to have my 6-year-old write a Christmas list so we have a goal for how much money we need to raise.
  • Stock up on shipping supplies!  Many eBay sellers get their supplies right off of eBay.  Boxes, packing supplies, mailing envelopes, postage supplies,  ink, extra printer paper…etc.  A couple of my favorites for supplies and postage off eBay are Uline.com and Stamps.com.  Stamps.com has a promo code – C-8RRH-ZNJ – if you’re interested in checking them out.  If you are interested in using the flat rate shipping then visit USPS.com for free shipping boxes.
  • Crock-Pot meals! – Nothing can be more satisfying than sitting down to an already prepared meal after working all day on your eBay sales!  Prepare it first thing in the morning and let it cook all day.  Keeping a schedule is important to making sure your family doesn’t get neglected.  So keep those crock-pot recipes on hand so you can fix it and forget it.

Best of luck selling this holiday season!

Getting eBay Inventory Without Spending Money

There are lots of people who would love to stay home and sell on eBay. The big question is – how do you buy inventory to sell when you don’t have the extra money? This is a very common concern. I started out in just this way – no money and no inventory – so I thought…Believe it or not a lot of the time what you have just laying around your house or taking up extra closet space can be worth more than you may think.

I started selling toys that were just sitting in my attic from when I moved out of my parents’ home. I’m talking about toys that were 10-15 years old at the time. I did some research on eBay and found that those toys were actually pretty valuable! Next, I moved onto novels – and they sold really well in lots of the same or the similar authors. The same goes for children’s books, same themes too. I even sold pieces to toys and games that were incomplete. I couldn’t believe it when I sold some old Monopoly pieces – I’ll never forget it! I believe it was the guy riding a horse, thimble, race car, and a few others. You will never know what may sell until you try!

So, what do you do when you’ve cleaned your house out and you have nothing left to sell?

A big, BIG option that helped catapult my eBay selling career, allowing me to buy new items to sell, was selling for other people. I sold mostly for family and friends. I knew quite a few people that were interested in making some extra money, but had no clue about eBay or just no time and no interest to learn. Here was an abundance of items that I could make money on and help someone else out at the same time – definite win-win! Just be aware that there is a lot of research and work that you must do to make this work. Be certain you are honest and upfront with your fees and the options if the items do not sell. I was motivated and ready to make some extra money for people and they were willing to help me make money as well. Without even realizing it, this helped me to learn what was desirable on eBay and what wasn’t.

Even today, I still sell for my friends. Their kids are always outgrowing their clothes, as are mine. I offer a set price for the clothing, only in excellent condition, and toys, only in complete and working condition. Learn more about being an eBay Trading Assistant.

If you found something that works for you on how to make money on eBay with little or no money invested – I would love for you to share in the comments.

Kids are Back in School – Now What?

School is under way and everyone is starting to get the hang of their new schedules. The Back to School shopping list has been fulfilled, but now is the time to start thinking about what you will need for the next season. As all parents know, kids just keep growing. Keep organized and stock up on the next size your daughter or son will be needing. This will give you a chance to be ready and prepared for the next season. Have you been thinking about what your kids may need for this winter yet? Continue your shopping after the Back to School Rush and find some amazing savings.

Sales and Clearances – each one can help you save money! Start by making a list so you don’t forget what you need! Make the list detailed – for example your daughter needs a few new shirts, your son needs new socks for this winter, and so on. Summer Clearance are prevalent by now, especially at thrift and consignment shops. It took me awhile to learn the in’s and out’s of these stores.

A question quite commonly asked is – when you shop for gently used clothing, what do you look for or how do you know when deals will present themselves for a good profit on eBay? The answer is a piece of advice worth knowing when you are trying to save every penny.

Make sure you know policies, payouts, the best drop off days, and especially when the sales are. This is important when you know that you are going to resell your kids clothes on eBay.

I am fortunate enough to have one very popular consignment store one town over from ours. Actually it is one of the only remaining consignment shops in this area. The owner will only accept top brands – a big plus when you only look for the best quality clothes. She also holds sales every season. Not only are the items still popular designer brands and high end boutique, they have already been marked down considerably because they are second hand, however the clothes are still in excellent condition. Usually the sale is 50% off the already reduced price OR you can stuff a bag for $15! How is that for a great way to stock up on eBay inventory!

By stocking up on your kids clothing, you will be ready when they need the next size. The best part is that what they outgrow you can begin to research to figure out what each item is selling for on eBay. In doing research I have found items sell for the same price or even more than what the item originally sold for off the store rack. One time I found a complete Oilily outfit for my daughter for $15 and when I got it home I realized that the pants were still NEW with tags and retail for $109! What a great find! The small amount of time I spent searching equaled a great reward in savings I managed to achieve. It was like getting my kids clothes for free!
